L-Arginine

Semi-essential amino acid

L-arginine (often shortened to “Arginine”) is one of the most valuable amino acids. It used to be classified as a semi-essential amino acid.

However, since was discovered that Arginine’s nitrogen atom (N) is the primary building block for the vasodilator Nitric Oxide (NO) it has been championed as an essential amino acid by many scientists.

In a recent study described Arginine as “unique amongst amino acids and promising for the improvement of health and wellbeing”. The body demands lots of Arginine also during illness, because it is involved in building important cells of the immune system.

In 1998 the scientists Luis Ignarro, Robert Furchgott and Ferid Murad were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their research on the numerous benefits of Nitric Oxide to the human body, which include:

  • A significant influence on the health of the body's entire vascular system. As such it greatly decreases the risk of stroke and heart attack, lowers hypertension (high blood pressure) and can be used as a natural remedy for the treatment of erectile dysfunction
  • Encouragement of healthy muscle tissue growth by promoting blood and therefore oxygen delivery
  • Strengthening of the immune system
  • Helping to maintain fats and cholesterol at healthy levels
  • An accompanying treatment for arteriosclerosis
  • To facilitate and restore memory and learning
  • Improve insulin resistance in diabetics

The body’s requirement for L-arginine rises especially during infections. L-arginine is a crucial component for the healthy functioning of the immune system.

L-Arginine in Food

L-Arginine is an important part of your daily diet. Especially nuts (Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, almonds, peanuts, coconut) contain high amounts of Arginine as well as meat, fish, whole-grain rice, wheatgerm and oats in lesser amounts.

L-Arginine and Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (or impotence) is defined as the man’s inability to achieve an erection sufficient for satisfying sexual intercourse less than 70% of the time over a period of 6 months. The tendency to experience erectile dysfunction increases with age. Studies have shown a direct relationship between erectile dysfunction and endothelilal dysfunction. This means that any kind of cardiovascular or circulatory disease is likely to directly result in erectile dysfunction. Compromised cardiovascular health is therefore considered a primary cause for erectile dysfunction.

L-Arginine is a very powerful natural remedy for vascular erectile dysfunction. Nitric Oxide's powerful vasodilatory (blood vessel widening) effect can be significantly enhanced by supplementing Arginine in large doses leading to an improved ability to sustain an erection during sexual intercourse. Combined with NO's effect on spermatozoa's mobility and Arginine's role as a nutrient and sperm-protector in seminal fluid, Arginine plays an important role in overall male fertility.

L-arginine is a central and essential component for the control processes of vasodilation. Arginine is the only building block for the neurotransmitter nitric-oxide (NO). This little molecule signals the dilation of blood vessels by relaxing the surrounding muscle smooth tissue. This regulation and resulting widening of blood vessels is an essential process in causing an erection of the male penis. An erection will not be possible without sufficient quantities of L-arginine in the blood causing sufficient vasodilation. amitamin® M forte therefore includes the recommended dose of 5,000mg L-arginine per day.

L-arginine and male fertility

L-arginine is a major component of the polyamines spermine and spermidine. They are important components of the male seminal fluid and stabilise the DNA within it.

fertilsan M by amitamin® therefore includes L-arginine as well as important antioxidants and building blocks of sperm cells. We recommend fertilsan M for men, who want to support their sperm generation effectively via their diet. Its unique formula of micronutrients (vitamins, trace elements and amino acids) has been specially developed in composition and dosage to optimise the male spermatogenesis.
